This original building, now two houses in the market place, had four cells and a small yard for exercise. Upon further investigation it was noted that guidance notes for teachers recommended that this building be included on historical walks for their students. He was responsible for establishing many new buildings in the town including reading rooms, meeting rooms and a courthouse. From the first page I thought 'oh no, this is one I will have to give up on, but I'll read just a bit more'.

The centre is a deeply chamfered niche leading to a tunnel vaulted entrance at the end of which is a smaller doorway. It was built on the site of the great castle of the de Gaunts and the de Beaumonts, which had been abandoned since the 16th century. Perhaps the reference mistakenly stemmed from earlier accounts of the ‘black hole’, attached to the previous town hall which was demolished in 1828. The floor levels were changed too, making the ground floor rooms slightly lower and those on the first floor taller. When I started reading this novel I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it as the amount of anger exhibited by Tabitha, her excessive bad language and her aggressive manner made her a rather unsympathetic character - despite my feeling sorry for her for what had happened to her in the past; also I was surprised by the treatment meted out to Tabitha in prison - if she was on remand and innocent until proven guilty, would she have been treated in exactly the same way as those prisoners who had been found guilty? You may bring up to two dogs to properties where dogs are allowed (please see specific property details for exemptions however dogs are not permitted on Lundy except assistance dogs).

Herein male and female prisoners were kept strictly separated, and each ward had its own exercise yard with a stone bench and water trough in which the prisoners might wash. The prison housed men, women and children until 1850, when the women and children moved to Tothill Fields Bridewell in Victoria (Westminster) leaving only male offenders over the age of 17. But while the corrective power of hard labour lay behind the original Houses of Correction (also known as Bridewells after the first to be founded in a former royal palace in London) they soon merged with ordinary gaols or lock-ups. The character of commitments to London's houses of correction changed in the eighteenth century, however, as they were subjected to increasing legal scrutiny. In the four Northumberland gaols the quantity of oatmeal is increased and given as porridge where the Government has recommended simply gruel.
