Each time you see it, another piece of the jigsaw falls into place - though you may find that the jigsaw makes a picture a little more abstract than you expected. Similar to some of Criterion’s other editions for Lynch’s films, the disc also includes a recorded excerpt of Lynch reading from Room to Dream, the 2018 book he wrote alongside Kristine McKenna. Von dieser Warte aus muss man ihm vielleicht entgegenhalten, dass sein Werk mit Sicherheit Post-Modern und mit Sicherheit auch Radikal ist, aber es ist eben auch Anachronistisch.

The eighty-minute documentary LYNCH (ONE) is a fragmented yet insightful look into the director’s idiosyncratic style and behaviour as he films INLAND EMPIRE and seemingly breaks the world record for smoking in a documentary. As things progress, Nikki finds herself in a web of fiction and reality sliding down the rabbit hole of a nightmarish labyrinth. Von der Schauspielerwahl (Laura Dern) über die Musik (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks) zu unterschiedlichsten Film- und Serienfiguren oder -settings die angedeutet werden. However, Studio Canal have used their pre-existing subtitles from their previous Blu-ray release, which means that if you turn on the full English subtitles it still reads "It's the, uh, 90-year-old niece. The PD-150 was generally used by low budget news crews, self shooters and, yes, film students with Hollywood pretensions. The audio presented for this release was remastered in January 2022 by the film’s original rerecording mixers–Lynch, Dean Hurley, and Ron Eng working from the original 5.

Trapped in its own bell jar, Inland Empire – taking its title from the Southern California region not because it’s set there, but simply because Lynch liked the name – summons the likes of Bergman’s Persona (1966) and Fellini’s Juliet of the Spirits (1965) in its allusive structure and suggestions of a fracturing female psyche, but only because the movie behaves like a narrative deprivation tank, forcing you to scramble for corollaries. David Lynch's Ambitious and apparently final movie is a sure treat for fans of the surreal and darkly unsettling universe created by the director's earlier works, filled with trademarks and references, Inland Empire pushes the envelope even further than Eraserhead, right into the subconscious of the viewer; especially for the open-minded to this particular kind of experience.Die Abtreibung in Eraserhead, der Mord in Lost Highway oder die verschmähte Liebe in Mulholland Drive. I think at this point it might be the only short that isn’t released as an extra on at least one Blu ray.

Aber es gibt dennoch ein Kernthema in diesem Film, dass wenn auch nicht direkt gezeigt so doch zentral in diesem Spinnennetz aus Eindrücken liegt.Don’t be put off with the seeming confusion and try to grasp it as a typical linear story - just let it soak into your awareness and absorb into your sub conscious, and that part of you which ‘knows’, as it will have an effect. However, it’s a shame the short film wasn’t included, as it was amusing, if off, as an interview with Lynch while he cooks dinner.

While the decision to shoot in DV may have unleashed his creativity (and inspired some film students to boot) the ensuring freedom to experiment resulted in a film that is easy to admire yet slightly more difficult to love.Ringing and edge enhancement can get particularly bad in long shots, with heavy halos wrapping around almost everything and eating up details.
