Debbie's lyrics on "The Beast" are so snarky and biting, I love that side of her songwriting: "For the first time in my life, the bouncers would greet me/the doormen would escort me/managers adored me. It's the most underappreciated of Blondie's works, and despite the fact that much of it was forced out it's nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. Ignore The Album Cover, The Record Rocks Ignore the idiotic album cover of Deborah Harry looking like Lassie the Collie and rescue dog. Hunter_ is also, at times, downright embarrassing (the awful faux-reggae of "Little Caesar" is the worst offender) and an obvious attempt to recreate past triumphs ("The Beast" falls completely flat at trying to imitate the sexy rap of "Rapture" from _Autoamerican_).

Determined to end on a high at the same time as having the desire to pursue solo projects, particularly the band's lead singer and obvious focal point Debbie Harry (Deborah Harry), it seemed as if Blondie would take great memories of a string of hits with them as they went. The next track, "Danceway" written by keyboardist Jimmy Destri (the songs he wrote for the band are genius) steps slightly away from the jungle theme. I love the dark simplicity of the final track, "The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game" which is a cover written by Smokey Robinson (performed by The Marvelettes). English Boys" is Harry and Chris Stein's melancholy tribute to "those English boys who had long hair", the Beatles, recorded the year after John Lennon's assassination in New York City, describing the innocence and idealism of the 1960s. The Hunter would not be followed up until 17 years later when Blondie reformed and released their seventh studio album No Exit. But compared with some of the band's previous delights and the weakness of some songs, it doesn't merit the same kind of recommendation as the likes of _Parallel Lines_.

By and large, though, The Hunter is an album of icy, otherworldly moods for moderns, a looking glass trained upon our own peculiar, self-consuming social mores. The New York-based rock group was briefly under consideration to perform the movie theme before Sheena Easton was chosen. I understand all the fuss and negative attention this album got over 30 years ago, but for me "The Hunter" is a thing of beauty (minus the hideous album cover). In the liner notes to the 2001 reissue of The Hunter, producer Mike Chapman stated, "I knew that we were in a different and far less accessible artistic space. In summary, this is an excellent album that suffered from a terrible album cover, poor lead off single, no number 1 pop songs, and a failed tour due to health problems. The band was a pioneer in the early American new wave and punk scenes of the mid- 70s, developing their sound in famous NYC clubs such as CBGBs. Orchid Club” summons you with tribal drumming that commences low, like something heard downriver, and then gets louder, as if you’d chanced upon some weird fertility rite. The Hunter is the sixth studio album by American rock band Blondie, released on May 24, 1982, by Chrysalis Records. The second single, "War Child," is an interesting stab at early '80s electro-rock that hit the UK Top 40, while "English Boys" is a surprisingly mid-tempo mellow pop number about The Beatles.

The Beast" deals with lead singer Debbie Harry's experiences of becoming a public figure: "I am the centre of attraction, by staying off the streets". summoning the lush, exotic imagery of jungles and desert isles, with all of their virile, teeming abundance.

War Child was largely ignored outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland (where it reached 39 and 21, respectively). The opening track is evident of that impeccable creativity, "Orchid Club" which is a heart-pounding, foot-stomping powerhouse!
