Eric Clapton was in pain. Deep pain. He was hopelessly in love with Pattie Boyd, the wife of his close friend George Harrison, and there was little he could do about it. Hence, Clapton did what any relatively desperate artist would to express his innermost feelings about the situation—he created an alternate identity (Derek), gathered a semi-fictional band around him (The Dominos), and channeled all of his heartache into a triumphant, sprawling double album, November 1970's Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Erlewine, Stephen Thomas. "MTV Unplugged – Eric Clapton | Credits". AllMusic . Retrieved 30 December 2015. The magic that ensued was breathtaking. The fusion of guitar playing – mainly Clapton on rhythm/lead and Allman on slide – is among the highest level of proficiency seen at one set of sessions. The rest of the band are tight throughout and captivate a bluesy, jamming feel. This section needs additional citations for verification. It returned to the US albums chart again in 1972, 1974 and 1977, and has since been certified Gold by the RIAA. The album finally debuted on the UK Albums Chart in 2011, peaking at number 68. In 2000, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2003, television network VH1 named Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs the 89th-greatest album of all time. In the same year, Rolling Stone ranked it number 117 on its list of " The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". [1] It was ranked at number 226 on the 2020 reboot of the list. [2] It was voted number 287 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000). The band played their first live show at Lyceum Ballroom on London on June 14, 1970 as part of a summer tour of the UK. The band went on to record Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs between late August and early October, with the additional weighty presence of Allman Brothers’ guitarist Allman. When recording was complete, they returned to the road for US and UK tours. Sadly the band didn’t last much longer, but they left behind a memorable recorded statement. Now we come to the crux of the matter. Taking the album title in its entirety, this is a collection of love songs sung to one woman. And Clapton’s vocals show it: there is a rawness throughout, evoking emotions through both power and tenderness, marking a definite step up from his vocals on that self-titled album.

() Perhaps the best cover is of blues and guitar legend Freddie King’s Have You Ever Loved A Woman. The guitar work from both men is infectious and the song contains perhaps the most apt lyric of all: “You just love that woman/So much it’s a shame and a sin/But all the time you know/She belongs to your very best friend.” A masterpiece As well as the remastered album, the box set contains two further LPs of bonus material, some of it previously unreleased on vinyl. This includes recordings from the spring 1971 sessions for their unrealized second album. The bonus material across the third and fourth LPs is mastered normally, rather than at half-speed, and the box also includes a 12” x 12” book of sleeve notes from the 40th anniversary edition of 2010.

The super-deluxe box adds another set of nice treats for fans: the album on double vinyl, a DVD featuring 5.1 surround remixes of the album (plus “Mean Old World”), and another two discs encapsulating the band’s stand at The Fillmore East in the fall of 1970. (The original double album from these dates, 1973′s In Concert, form the groundwork for this part of the set, and each disc is augmented with four bonus songs first released on Live at The Fillmore, a 1994 live set that took different performances from those concerts.) The whole set is housed in a box featuring pop-up artwork, reproduced swag and a new hardcover book. a b c d e f "100 Greatest Guitar Solos: 14.) Layla (Eric Clapton, Duane Allman)". It was the true fusion of American blues and jazz with The British Invasion," Layla executive producer Tom Dowd told me in 1992. (He passed away a decade later.)
