Description

The chapel is decorated with frescos inspired by oriental art. The chapel was consecrated on 1 October 1966 and handed over to the City of Reims on 18 October 1966. The chapel was designated an historic monument in 1992. First impression: a sensation of freshness, with rounded, delectable notes. Juicy scents of succulent white and yellow fruits entice, with hints of lychee, pineapple, praline. Appetizing aromas of pastry – yeast, brioche – heighten the anticipation. In 1957, René Lalou, President of Maison Mumm, was looking for a symbol to reinforce the image of its champagne rosé. An avid art collector, he asked Foujita to work on an idea, which the artist presented in the form of a watercolour. “Léonard Foujita’s Rose” had just been born. The fruit of harmonious weather conditions, despite the particularly rainy summer, Mumm Millésime 2008 displays yellow fruit aromas, enhanced by notes of delicious pastries which follow through to the palate, accompanied by beautiful minerality. Foujita also gave G.H. Mumm a fresco depicting The Virgin in the Vines. The rose featured in the painting became the cuvée's emblem and appears on the metallic cap on top of the cork of the rose Champagne.

It was founded by three brothers: Jacobus, Gottlieb and Phillip Mumm, German winemakers from the Rhine valley, along with G. Heuser and Friedrich Giesler on March 1, 1827, as P. A. Mumm Giesler et Co. P.A. were the initials of the Mumms' father, Peter Arnold Mumm, a successful wine merchant from Solingen. Mumm's label is famous for its red ribbon ( Cordon Rouge), patterned after and resembling the red sash of the Grand Cross ( Grand-croix)—formerly called Grand Ribbon ( Grand cordon)—the highest level of the French Legion of Honour. Following the tour, a tasting of Mumm’s cuvées sheds light on the philosophy of excellence that has guided the House for almost 200 years. Mumm Cordon Rouge is a symbol of the House’s expertise and the avant-garde spirit it has nurtured for nearly 200 years. This emblematic cuvée is now set within a red and gold case bearing the MUMM name in a new, resolutely modern graphic design. Mumm’s 100% Grand Cru champagnes, RSRV Blanc de Blancs and RSRV Blanc de Noirs, express the best of the House’s vineyard and the nobility of these grape varieties. Praised for its elegance and freshness, the RSRV Blanc de Blancs reflects the very essence of Chardonnay from Cramant. The rare cuvée RSRV Blanc de Noirs is produced from Pinot Noir grown in Verzenay, the historic Mumm terroir. It reveals a champagne with incredible aromatic richness and beautiful complexity.Mumm Cordon Rouge is beautifully presented in an iconic bottle adorned with a red ribbon thathas paid homage to the Legion of Honour since 1876. Made from a rich palette of more than 120 villages representing all the diversity of the Champagne region of France, Mumm Cordon Rouge is the signature cuvee of Maison Mumm. This exceptional brut champagne blends Mumm’s signature grape variety, Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Aube; with Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, Sézannais, Vitryat and Aube; and Meunier from the Marne and Ardre valleys and the Montagne de Reims. In the early years of the 19th century, Peter Arnold Mumm’s three sons, Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp, recognised the sales potential of the outstanding sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France. As Germany and France enjoyed good relations at the time, the Mumm brothers made the bold decision to establish a new branch of the family company in the Champagne region, creating a branch office in Reims with the assistance of a local representative, G.Heuser.

Mumm has decided to celebrate this heritage with a champagne gift set collection, reinventing the art and pleasure of giving. Presented in an elegant case, these outstanding gifts will delight refined palates at new year’s celebrations, birthdays or any other special occasion. The House’s legendary cuvées stand as a testimony to their era while reflecting their terroir. Thanks to its lively, intense flavours and capricious weather conditions, Mumm Millésimé 2012 was marked by severe springtime frost and heavy rainfall, followed by cool, wet weather in June during flowering and a particularly hot end to summer. All of these conditions resulted in yields that were low but of exceptional quality. The resulting wines are intense and superbly well-balanced, with the Pinot Noir contributing aromas of white fruit and citrus, combined with the roundness and voluptuousness of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. It is a relationship that has been nurtured over the years, as evidenced by the bottles produced by Mumm in the 19th century, personalised for leading restaurants and hotels. Even at that time, Mumm’s champagnes were regularly mentioned in publications featuring the views of leading arbiters of taste, which included the menus of receptions attended by society’s crème de la crème. The brand also maintained excellent relationships with the period’s prominent professional gourmet associations. Full of character and emotion, the Mumm vintage champagnes merit gastronomic food pairings that match their flavour profiles. The Millésime 2008 goes marvellously with sweet and sour dishes, such as pan-fried foie gras and apricot jelly or game, accompanied by caramelised quince, while the Millésime 2012 unveils all its qualities when paired with fish, shellfish, or tangy, fruity desserts, which enhance its freshness and minerality.

Inspired by the initial adventure of the company’s founding fathers, Georges Hermann Mumm tirelessly travelled the globe, across Europe and as far away as Australia and New Zealand to market his champagnes. Already at the turn of the twentieth century, the company counted some twenty subsidiaries in the world’s main markets, including the United States, Russia and Canada, but also Brazil and Peru. Georges Hermann Mumm’s greatest creation was certainly the famous “Cordon Rouge”, first released in 1875. From the royal tables of European sovereigns to space exploration, the iconic red sash found on the bottles of Mumm champagne symbolizes remarkable craftsmanship that, combined with a constant quest for innovation, perpetuates the House’s emblematic motto, “Only the Best”. Since 1876, the iconic cuvee with its bold red sash signals the start of a memorable moment: good times with good friends. Blended from a minimum of 100 crus, Mumm Cordon Rouge expresses the rich diversity of Champagne’s terroirs, always in the fresh, vibrant style that is the signature of Pinot Noir, the House’s emblematic grape. Carefully preserved in the Mumm cellars, they constitute an extraordinary range of aromas and flavours which evoke all the richness of the terroir. During blending, the Cellar Master selects an array of unique wines to produce champagnes that reflect the House’s excellence and unique style.
