There’s also a superb discussion of the peculiar, overtone-rich and resonant tone of the tanpura – a guitar-like Indian classic instrument that creates, refines and embellishes to a high art the buzzing sound that Western instrument-making tradition generally goes out of its way to avoid. Softcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. Clean and tight, this copy shows light shelf wear and rubbing to glossy softcard covers. Bilingual English/German text German/English captions. HArd to find early volume. However, I do have some gripes.. Some of the writing needed more support or detail (for example about development of blue LEDs, - not sure about some of the physics description is 100% correct). Also, some things needed more diagrammatic support (S twist and Z twist string for example). There was a nice print of lens development that would be a nice wall print, but was slightly irrelevant to the discussion. Well, she says, everything we made was fashioned out of a single piece of engineering material. A toppled tree trunk spanning a stream was our bridge, while the cave was our home. The nail, along with its derivatives – such as the rivet, screw and bolt – meant that we could expand our horizons by joining things together. Another of her subjects – string – helped in a similar way, although this was a technology we could entangle and wind to bind a shard of flint to an axe handle, or adapt into products as diverse as clothing and guitar strings.

Used book that is in excellent condition. May show signs of wear or have minor defects. From the physics behind both Roman nails and modern skyscrapers to rudimentary springs that inspired lithium batteries, Agrawal shows us how even the most sophisticated items are built on the foundations of these ancient and fundamental breakthroughs in engineering.” Nuts and Bolts by Roma Agrawal is a captivating exploration of the field of engineering that combines personal anecdotes, historical accounts, and technical explanations to provide readers with a comprehensive and engaging look into the world of structures. As someone with a keen interest in science and engineering, I found this book to be an enlightening and enjoyable read.Agrawal explores an array of intricate technologies—dishwashers, spacesuits, microscopes, suspension bridges, breast pumps—making surprising connections, explaining how they work, and using her own hand-drawn illustrations to clarify complex technical principles.”

A splendid book: clearly written, elegantly structured and full of facts you are unlikely to chance on anywhere else' DAILY MAIL Roma Agrawal is an engineer, author and presenter who is best known for working on the design of The Shard, Western Europe's tallest tower. She studied engineering atImperial College London and physics at the University of Oxford. Roma has given talks to thousands at universities, schools and organisations around the world, including TEDx. Agrawal’s detours into politics – the plight of women in STEM, the use of male physical norms in product design – are less happy. They would hardly raise an eyebrow, had she only given them the space they deserved. As it is, she invites the reader to genuflect before some highly dubious ex cathedra statements. In Nuts and Bolts , award-winning Shard engineer and broadcaster Roma Agrawal deconstructs our most complex feats of engineering into seven fundamental inventions: the nail, spring, wheel, lens, magnet, string and pump. Each of these objects is itself a wonder of design, the result of many iterations and refinements. Together, they have enabled humanity to see the invisible, build the spectacular, communicate across vast distances, and even escape our planet.

Creating Poetry: Nuts and Bolts Instruction to Get Beginners Started and Comfortable with Using Terms, Forms and Different Styles in Their PoetryThe book is skillfully organized into thematic chapters that cover a wide range of topics, including the history of engineering, the evolution of materials, and the challenges faced by engineers. Each chapter delves into a specific aspect of engineering, providing insightful details and anecdotes that shed light on the thought processes and creativity required to build extraordinary structures. Agrawal effortlessly weaves together historical examples, such as the construction of the Eiffel Tower or the Brooklyn Bridge, with modern-day projects, showcasing the continuous innovation in the field. The idea for ‘Nuts and Bolts’ has been with the author most of her life, and she recalls her childhood in New York where she whiled away her time decoding the “sheer scale and drama” of the skyscrapers that surrounded her. This curiosity extended to cars, computers and coffee machines, leading her down a path not only to a successful career in engineering, but also towards a deep understanding of the evolution of these early innovations that would become fascinating chapters in a book about who we were, are and will be as humans.
