One thing you might come across on SKY is that stereo can get much louder than DD, so when an advert comes on when you’re watching a DD programme the advert will be really loud because the adverts are in stereo, which can be annoying.

The front mesh plays host to a bright blue LED display that disappears when idle. There are no buttons on the unit itself – everything is controlled by a stylish silver remote. But for soundbases build quality is more important than looks, and on that score the DM75 is a winner. Its high-density fibreboard bodywork is remarkably sturdy, allowing it to support TVs up to 40kg in weight. The DM50 was designed for TVs up to 40in, but the DM75 is suited to anything larger – provided it’s lighter than 40kg and its stand fits within the DM75’s top surface. Our 55-inch Samsung set sat snugly on top, even with its unusual four-pronged stand. Ok got it home now and did more testing also it says I have to run it in for 20 hours to get the best out of it.For day-to-day operation you can carry on using your TV’s remote thanks to the IR learning function, just one of many user-friendly features that make the DM100 a pleasure to work with. Canton DM100 – Performance But the DM100 isn’t all about that bass. First-class mid-range and treble reproduction lends impressive clarity and vigour, heightening the excitement when the action hots up. The snap of gunfire is fierce but never coarse, plus every scene is teeming with incisive top-end detail. If you are looking to improve on sound from your TV but don't want all the wires and clutter of a surround sound system then a soundbase is the obvious choice. The DM75 also features a cleaverly designed larger chassis to suit larger screen sizes as some people may have been put off at the fear of it being dwarfed by a large screen. A helpful automatic on/off function fires up the unit when it detects a signal on the optical or coaxial inputs and shuts down after 30 seconds if there’s no signal. Simply turn off your TV before going to bed and the soundbase will automatically follow suit.

Another new feature is an Eco mode that automatically goes into standby if a signal isn’t detected for an hour (although it’s disabled if auto power is activated). Once again Canton has shown the rest how it’s done with a soundbase that delivers an unusually powerful and refined performance. It’s every bit as impressive as the DM50, perhaps even more so, offering crisp sonic detail, dynamic midrange, excellent scale and commanding bass – the sort you simply don’t expect from such a slim box. The inclusion of Bluetooth apt-X is a huge bonus. On the front is a small LED display above a subtle Canton logo. The display only has room for three digits, which feels a little simplistic when dealing with some of the setup menu options but it’s fine otherwise. Thankfully it disappears when idle, leaving you with a blank fascia that doesn’t distract from the screen. So that's me from what I had to what I have now and with the possibility to buy a bk sub I'm more than satisfied with my decision and don't regret it yet, I just hope the canton doesn't have some problems about not working after 7 months etc. Started with monitor audio vector 5.1, the upgraded to q7000 5.1 both with denon avr x2000 the sold them and got Marrantz pm6005 with tannoy v4i to 2.0 thought this will give me better sound quality over cheaper 5.1 but I was missing the speech I had with my 5.1 I had before.

The Canton’s huge sound is largely down to its incredibly deep and muscular bass. Play Looper on Blu-ray and every time Joe blows away a victim, the blunderbuss shot has palpable weight, beefed up by those four potent subs. One of the secrets of Canton’s success is that it takes a hi-fi approach to its speaker design. The DM55 uses separate tweeters, midrange drivers and woofers for each channel (six drivers in total) powered by a 200W amplifier Credit for this beefy sound should go to the quartet of downward-firing 100mm woofers inside the box. They add depth and punch to the effects that need them, such as the Trolls’ thumping footsteps and their booming voices. The rhythmic rumble of the kettle drums in Howard Shore’s excellent score also sounds huge, injecting the scene with urgency and gravitas. We doubt you’ll need an external sub. It’s also really worthwhile spending the time to look at the key differences between the two products. For that you can use our comparison table about which looks at the main features of both products to give you a clear idea of where one product perhaps benefits over another. When comparing the two it’s a really good idea to have an idea in your mind of the key features that you need from your Home cinema systems and sound bars as this will help you to narrow down the products that do or don’t meet your criteria.

Elsewhere on the spec sheet is apt-X Bluetooth and a new Bluetooth select function that automatically switches to Bluetooth when it detects an audio signal. It’s more useful than it sounds. In action the DM75 is a class act, just like its little brother. After letting rip with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Blu-ray, what impresses most is the sheer scale and power of the Canton’s sound. Obviously it can’t match a full-size 5.1 system, but to get such a dynamic and potent sound from a box measuring just 69mm high is nothing short of a miracle. The Canton DM75 Soundbase has 200 watts of amplification that ensures the delivery of coherent sound. It makes lip-sync, bass and treble easier and less forced.

You’ll also find lip sync and dynamic range control adjustments. These functions can be accessed by holding down either the ‘play mode’ or ‘sound’ buttons – use the volume keys to turn them on and off. The three-digit setup menu is predictably basic, but you’ll get used to it.

Key specs

Highs are clear and sharp, but amid new competition can teeter on the edge of brightness at volume. It’s not uncomfortable, but it does add to the slight feeling of fragility when compared to the likes of the Solo 15 and Geneva Model Cinema.
