The night before her birthday she asks for a gorilla and is suprise to find a stuffed toy as a present on her bed. The action is driven by the father, who is the only one in this family who thinks a trip to the zoo would be fun. We are shown this in the car, when the father is the only one to laugh at his own joke. Browne, in turn, makes this into a joke for the reader by saying ‘everyone laughed except’ (everyone else in the car). This solipsistic father has no empathy for the desires of the rest of his family. Jane Doonan, "The object lesson: picture books of Anthony Browne", Word & Image 2:2 (1986 April–June), pp.159–72. In 2001–2002 Browne took a job as writer and illustrator at Tate Britain, working with children using art as a stimulus to inspire visual literacy and creative writing activities. It was during this time that Browne conceived and produced The Shape Game (Doubleday, 2003).

Zoo is a postmodern picture book written and illustrated by Anthony Browne, first published in 1992. Browne’s story is not a pleasant or easy read, but it does the job it’s meant to. This is a critique of zoos as a fun day out (for children and animals alike), and subverts a long tradition in children’s literature as zoos as an arena for carnivalesque fun.Instead, the boy realises that zoos are not fun, which is just the first step towards full awareness of humans’ relationship to animals, and how far humans have become removed from our natural environments, of small communities, of ready access to nature, and everything that goes with that. This was charming book of a young girl who loved all things gorilla and wanted little more than to see one in person. But her father had to work hard to support her and often did not seem to have a lot of time to entertain her. As we all know, birthdays can be a magical, special time for children and young Hannah is no exception. Heartwarming and sweet. Another book about Willy the chimpanzee who doesn't conform to the macho stereotypes and so comes in for a lot of hard times and bullying. A boy goes to the Zoo with his Mum, Dad and brother, where they see a variety of animals and enjoy the delights of the zoo. Poor old mum has to endure Dad’s bad jokes and her two cheeky monkeys messing about, but they all have a good day in the end. Think about the income and expenses that a zoo might have? Where do they get their money from? What do they have to spent it on?

Dad makes a joke about ‘jam’. Can you think of other words that have more than one meaning? Think is called a homonym. Could you make a poster with lots of examples of them? Dad, mum and two brothers spend a day at the zoo, looking at the animals in the cages - or is it the animals that are looking at them? Read more Details With a perhaps unwitting nod to Har old and the Purple Crayon , Browne has created a book for readers younger than his usual audience. A white bear, upon meeting a grouchy gorilla, draws him a Continue reading » One day Bear goes for a walk in the jungle. Unfortunately, he is not alone. Two eager hunters have spotted him. Look out, Bear! However on the eve of her birthday something peculiar happens… She awakens to discover a gigantic gorilla at the end of her bed! Thus, beginning a magical adventure, the pair embark on trips to the zoo and cinema.

Kirsty is a first-class dreamer. her colourful fantasies of revelry and rivalry will have all young readers rooting for her. Clever, intriguing, and decidedly droll, Annalena McAfee's juxtaposition of reality and fantasy provides the perfect vehicle for the imaginative art of Anthony Browne. Que impactante es como la literatura logra provocarnos sensaciones inolvidables, terroríficas y realistas en tan pocas palabras. In 2000 Browne was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, an international award given to an illustrator for their body of work. This prize is the highest honour a children's writer or illustrator can win and Browne was the first British illustrator to receive the award.

Look at the picture of the giraffes. Can you see how they are camouflaged against the wall of the giraffe house. Can you think of other animals that use camouflage? As they enter the dark wood, familiar fairy tale characters confront the issues of fear of love, shame, grief, jealousy, loneliness, and joy in this illustrated collection of poems. A lovely story about how a lonely and neglected girl living with her father finds comfort and joy in the thing she loves the most, gorillas!
