Fans of superhero movies will enjoy the spectacular fight scenes, the ethical conundrums and the timeless clash between good and evil. Hushed whispers spread across the salon and an annoyed look settled on Mum’s face. She hates standing out almost as much as she hates me standing out. Then her face evened out suddenly, just before she gave in to the peer pressure she’s always warning me about. I remember the first time I felt like this. Mum and I were waiting hand in hand at a bus stop, and a group of kids started making fun of my hair. Mum ignored them, then bent down to me, as if she knew I was about to lose it. Her smile was gentle as she told me that I needed to control my emotions, because bad things would happen if I ever set them free. There are quite a few story developments near the end, some of which I really liked and some of which I didn't, but overall a really solid book and I'm so happy it exists! But Onyeka’s new reality brings challenges and she soon finds herself in the midst of a battle for truth, freedom and life itself.

Author Dhonielle Clayton makes her middle-grade debut with a fantasy adventure set in a global magic school in the sky. It’s weird seeing her without the furry cosplay fox ears that usually rest on her head. Cheyenne is obsessed with Katsuki, her favorite anime character, and she likes to dress up as her. I’m used to it, but I always catch people giving her funny looks. Not that Cheyenne cares what anyone thinks. Sometimes I think she likes standing out because it makes everyone pay attention, as if she’s daring them to say something about her fashion sense. I prefer going unnoticed.A truly brilliant story of courage and resilience and exceptional animals. In London, Onyeka only has 1 friend and her mother. While at AOS, she gains a group of friends and a relative she didn’t know existed. She learns that family isn’t just who you come from. Sometimes it’s the people you surround yourself with. I loved the importance of family, friendship, and found family in this story. Watching Onyeka navigate through all three of these facets was inspiring and heartwarming! Having recently finished Tolá Okogwu’s first installment of Onyeka I was eager to begin Onyeka and the Rise of the Rebels. Book 2 is brilliant, yet another middle grade wonder for readers of around 8 years plus. It also provides a glossary and discussion of Pidgin English, which is a label for a style of communication between groups of people who don't share a language.
