This film is the first in a series of five shot in the 1950s and 60s based on Giovanni Guareschi's well-loved "Don Camillo" stories. The joint Italian-French productions were made with the involvement of the author himself, who wrote screenplays and Italian dialog for various entries in the series; therefore, most consider them to be the official movie versions of the Don Camillo stories. Guareschi is quoted as warmly approving of the way that stars Fernandel and Gino Cervi brought to life his two famous protagonists, the battling parish priest and Communist mayor of a small village in post-war Italy. Today, more than forty years after the series was completed, the films are still played on European television, dubbed into a variety of languages. It belongs to a long series of Franco-Italian (or Italo-French) coproductions which provided hundreds of movies to the cinema during 30 years after World War II.Victory, as such, is never sought; the wry wisdom of il Cristo seeks not supremacy but equanimity within the Little World, which is achieved through an understanding and acceptance of what being human means. Giovanni's message is that what works at the micro level of the Little World can be made to work universally, the world over.

Having read all of Giovanni Guareschi's Don Camillo stories, several times, I was very pleased to find "The Little World of Don Camillo" on YouTube. It has always been odd to me - an atheist since my teens - that I love these books so much, but I came to realise over time that the stories are not about the triumph of Christianity over Communism but rather the triumph of humanity over cruelty, ignorance and brutality. Guareschi is a world-weary comedic writer who had lived through the Mussolini era, two world wars and a German prison camp. He isn't putting fascists in these stories, but he finds a lot of humor in pitting dogma against dogma. And while it's clear that he is no communist sympathizer, he puts heart into all sides of the conversation. Fernandel is great as Don Camillo, the hot-headed priest. And Gino Cervi shines in the role of Peppone. See this one, you won't regret it. Fun from beginning to end!
