Description

A Type C fuse is actually a type of miniature circuit breaker (MCB). MCBs are a type of circuit breaker used with lower-powered circuits to cut off current in the event of an overload. Type C fuses trip circuits when the current exceeds the rated one by between five and ten times - i.e. at 100-500 amps for a 20amp device. Type D Fuses If the appliance shows 60 Hz, then this appliance is not suitable for use within the UK. If the appliance shows 50–60 Hz it is suitable for the dual use (Europe/UK). Unsurprisingly for such a widely used component, fuses are available in a multitude of models and voltage capacities for use in different industrial, manufacturing and electronic settings. So from this calculation the ideal fuse would be the one amp fuse, but again, most manufacturers will have put in a three amp fuse. Typical example: A Kettle. Switch fuse units distribute current while shielding cables and devices from the damage that would be caused by power fluctuations along a particular electrical circuit. Switch fuse units are used in industrial and commercial buildings as well as domestic properties.

The for example 25, 40, 60, 80,100A rating you see on an RCD, is simply the maximum current that must be allowed to flow through the device under normal conditions, ergo, it needs to be protected by ana upstream protective device of that size. Unless it is an RCBO, a "normal" RCD to IEC 61008 (which is what most people are familiar with) will not detect overcurrent. Hence the requirement for an overcurrent protective device of the saame current rating as the thermal rating of the RCD. Be warned, if you are tempted to use something like a paperclip or piece of tinfoil wrapped around an old fuse or a nail, don’t. It is extremely dangerous and could result in electrocution, a fire or total failure of your appliance. Generally in this instance you will be having a 13 amp fuse in the fuse spur, feeding down to a 13 amp fuse in your plug,. Lastly, an RCD is NOT the panacea of all evils, they do not protect against overload or short circuit, only live to earth faults. The majority of the time there is no identification plate on the table lamp, however we know that the maximum lightbulb wattage is going to be 100 W, so the calculation would be:Most UK plugs are fitted with a 3 amp or 13 amp fuse. 3 amp fuses are used with a range of lower power domestic goods and tools, including lamps, TVs, and drills. Meanwhile, higher power goods such as washing machines, kettles and toasters normally require a 13 amp fuse. What Happens When a Fuse Blows? Each coloured cable has copper wires inside because copper is a good conductor of electricity. The outer layer (what we tend to refer to as the “wire” is flexible plastic, as plastic provides good insulation; this wire is commonly referred to as the “ flex“; short for the “ flexible cable“. You may be surprised to learn but there is a very high percentage of British adults who do not know how to wire a plug. We as PAT testers come across literally thousands of badly wired plugs every year – it is our job to make sure plugs are wired correctly. Resettable SMD fuses, by contrast, can be used multiple times. They function in a similar way to resettable thermal fuses and are available in multiple sizes and capacities. Striker Fuses In the UK, the majority of domestic appliances can stay with a pre-fitted moulded plug. The plugs have either a 3 amp or a 13 amp rated fuse - It is very rare that you find anything inbetween although there are other fuses available. The plug with its fuse for the appliance make the minimum protection required for your piece of equipment/appliance. An incorrect fuse however will continually blow if it is incorrectly rated or fail to protect your equipment from a catastrophic meltdown if it is too high.

It is without doubt that UK plug wiring, the UK plug is a brilliant design, and does keep millions of British users safe every day. However, it is important that these users ensure that..Striker fuses are fuses fitted with a spring-loaded striking device that can trip adjacent switches and also indicate that a fuse has blown. Type C Fuses Whether you are rewiring a plug that is already in use or wiring up a new plug for the first time it is important to get it right.

If you have a plug embossed on the fuse carrier on your plug, there will be the fuse rating for your appliance. I.e. 13 A or 3 A.I have a pre-fitted moulded plug on my appliance and there is no fuse? I have no idea what type or fuse rating I require!" Slow Acting fuses include a delay mechanism that allows short, lower power electrical surges to pass through the circuit without the fuse blowing. They are also known as Slow Blow or Time Delay fuses. Dual Element fuses feature a higher performance delay mechanism A mains plug takes a 25.4 mm (1.25 inch) BS 1362 fuse, these fuses are available from any local supermarket or DIY store. They are cheap so don’t risk stealing a fuse from another appliance just to get your appliance going, unless you are using a fuse of the same rating. AC fuses are specifically designed for use with alternating current circuits. They are more resistant to electric arcs when the fuse blows than DC fuses and more compatible with standard voltage power supplies. They can usually cope with higher voltages, too. DC Fuses

So from this calculation the ideal fuse would be 1 amp. However most manufacturers put a 3 amp fuse in the plug as standard. Well, in fact, the UK plug may be bigger but it is designed that way on purpose to be safer than any other plug in the world.

For example, if an electric drill requiring a new fuse has a 700-watt rating, divide this by 230 (the standard UK mains voltage). The result is 3.04, so you will require a 3A amp fuse for the plug. Where Would a Type D Fuse Be Installed? An electricity cable (or flex) used for connecting an electrical appliance to the plug will usually contain two or three wires wrapped in coloured insulation. These are commonly called “ two core“, or “ three core” cables; not to be confused with “ twin and earth” which is the term used for mains wiring cables, although there is no real reason why the terms can’t be interlinked. The fuse is designed to protect your equipment/appliance and also you in the case of an overload due to a mechanical or an electrical fault.
