Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. Destiny lives an ordinary life with her loving Mum, going to High School, facing bullies and doing her dreaded homework. While it could loosely be described as a thriller, it's more accurately police procedural meets dark psychological drama.

The writing leans much heavier in the literary and folklore realm than a traditional thriller and the pacing is also a bit steadier than a fast-paced thriller.

Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense.

I really felt for Lauren and also ended up feeling as frustrated as she did when no one believed her--and even when she starts to doubt herself. Her writing makes you anxious and jumpy, worried that something will steal out of the shadows to take what’s yours. Perhaps I am underestimating the capacity of child readers to recognise this element that is never explicitly stated; I shall have to ask my sister when she finishes the book.Summary: A carefully-crafted and uncannily clever tale about a new mother's irrational (or perhaps not so irrational) panic for the safety of her two children. I started reading the Spiderwick Chronicles in elementary school and went on a little fairy binge; maybe it’s more common in children’s books?

The book is based on changeling folklore, in which human children are abducted by fairies and replaced with fairy children.Best points are the depth of the characterizations, the details of Lauren’s postpartum struggle, and the uncertainty throughout the whole thing about whether Lauren is suffering from postpartum psychosis or whether the crazy woman who wants the babies really is fay. That both girls could have the same father is an interesting plot device, as it not only provides a tangible link between the two girls, but also makes difficult reading for an adult. I enjoyed that each chapter alternated between the two girls' points of view, but the overall pacing was slow and I found it hard to stay engaged.

The book explores two sides of the spectrum; working class and the rich and famous upper class but in an interesting way pushes the two together. It is very true to life, and you can tell this is what Jaqueline Wilson sets out to do in her books.

Some of Wilson’s books are brilliant, but as with any prolific author, some of the themes and characters tend to blur into one another somewhat.
