Description

Benromach 10 is the starting point in the Benromach range. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and some Sherry barrels for 9 years. Later on, it is married for a year more in Sherry barrels. It is bottled at 43% abv. This whisky is like a "young" at heart Grampa. He isn't a perfect individual but he's likeable, perhaps loveable and has heart. And while he might be all the above, he isn't the most "out there old guy"... he's calm, relaxed, interesting enough but not terribly so to make you always want to revisit him day after day, but when you do, you have to slow down to his pace to see just what he's all about and appreciate it. That is this whisky.

A beautifully balanced combination of bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks with a slightly peated spirit. Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019

Stewed apples, dried fruit, leather, nutty malt, smoke and some bits of charcoal and dried strawberries. The more you’ll taste, the more you’ll zone in on the little differences, and the broader you vocabulary will organically become. In reality there are normally no more than two or three “dominant” characteristics in a whisky, which tend to be the ones we flag up first in tasting notes. The other flavours and aromas are where things get particularly individual and personal – for instance where I’ve said “peach” another taster might get a different stone fruit – or perhaps a different fruit entirely. Crafted from “the finest oak casks” of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry, this release doesn’t seem to have the additional sherry finish that it previously had. The old ‘Romach 10 was a marriage of 80% ex-Bourbon and 20% ex-Sherry casks that spent 12 months finishing in ex-Oloroso casks.

Whisky reviews for Benromach 10-year-old

Finish drifts off into the night on a smoky ashy trail leaving the drinker wondering what exactly happened… on first sniff and sip that is. Once you know what to expect and settle in, this whisky shows a nice complexity and the ride becomes less jarring, more even and more enjoyable. The The Benromach 10 Years is a good sipping malt. It's true what they say about Benromach 10 100° that it's a gorgeous unique Speyside scotch, amongst the finest in any range age and price. It has enough body to take some water and opens up with a few drops, patience is rewarded with this one. The best thing is, I can still remember writing those tasting notes. There’s this snapshot edged into my retina. Me sitting at the dining table having this sort of emotional moment. Not because it was the best whisky I ever tasted. But simply because a trusty friend showed up and exceeded expectations. Maybe that’s why I haven’t taken the time to sit down and write tasting notes once again – afraid to be disappointed. The Benromach 10 100° holds its own against many other older more expensive whiskies, this punches well above its weight. Those who have rated this whisky a 4.. are spot on. Though let me make it clear, this is not just any 4.. this is a strong 4.. a special 4 as this whisky deserves. But it can't go beyond 4 because of its flaws, yet.. ironically, it is the flaws that earn it a .. "special" 4. What’s nice to read is their embracing of inconsistency. Not every batch or bottle will taste the same. And that’s fine. Good, in fact. Obviously, they’ll always be recognisably Benromach, but the little differences and incongruities that make matured whisky the product that it is deserve to be celebrated, not polished over. On the palate is a light whisky with a medium body. It has some light wood smoke notes, followed by a fruitier side. A touch of barley and nuts with some baked apple notes. There are also some raisins and a citrus touch. More nuts come forward, with a bit of vanilla and honey. A souvenir of apple pie. The finish is medium and warm, with some smoke notes lingering on the palate. Tasting notes are a pretty arcane, nebulous business – so much of it is completely personal – and no one starts off with a big vocabulary of them. Like anything else, it’s just a case of tasting lots of whiskies, and maybe just thinking of one or two elements that stand out most strongly in each one.
