While my current go-to hiking tent - the Wild Country Zephyros 2 - weighs in at 1.854kg, I'd surprisingly never weighed it together with the footprint, and here's where things start to get interesting; excluding pegs, the Zephyros 2 and footprint have a combined weight of 2.209kg. Remove the pegs from the Mongar 2, and the total weight is 2.031kg! Despite being much larger, the Mongar 2 is the lighter tent. Now let’s go through the parts of the Naturehike Mongar 2 one by one, and let’s see what I thought of the design. The Inside MATERIAL - Rainfly:20D rip-stop nylon, silicone coated (4000mm waterproof index),Floor:20D rip-stop,silicone coated(4000mm waterproof index),Poles:7001 aluminum. The lightweight, mesh inner tent and air vents on the flysheet, work together to provide an airy and well-ventilated space. Even in cold weather, with two bodies inside, I have yet to experience condensation within the tent. Room with a view. Enjoying sunrise in the Kouebokkeveld. (IG: @daniapea)

Ease of pitching

It shares the same overall design as the Hilleberg but the materials are obviously not as high-quality in an entry-level version. Just like with the Mongar 2, it has two vestibules and two doors, so you can store your kit outside the main sleeping compartment.

Camping by a natural barrier does not mean you should camp under the only tree if lightning is forecast. Please use your common sense and keep yourself safe!) Durability The centre spreader pole does allow for a lot of flex which causes the vestibules deform in high winds, but it never felt like the structure of the tent was in danger. The tent is secured by four guy ropes – two on either end – and eight other pegs securing the main structure. The Mongar 2 is noticeably more comfortable than many other Naturehike models, with loads of space to spread out. Naturehike frequently claims that its tents are suitable for 4 seasons. I disagree with this and would ask you to treat the products as 3 season tents for your safety. Why all these versions and variations? Well we’ve got absolutely no idea. It could simply be a case of them having certain fabrics available in certain colours at certain production prices; or perhaps they are just trying to offer a variety to suit different circumstances; or maybe they offer a few different versions to test the market… Who knows! For the purposes of this review, the Mongar was tested overnight under a number of different weather conditions and seasons: frigid, high winds, as well as rain, in the Kouebokkeveld, cold but calm spring conditions at Luna Peak summit in the Cederberg, and balmy evenings in the Langeberg and Eastern Cape. In all tested conditions, the Mongar provided a safe haven from the elements, whether it was a light morning dew or icy winds. The sturdy Mongar withheld serious buffeting from high winds in the Kouebokkeveld mountains (IG: @daniapea) I love that this tent has two doors because it really does transform your camping experience if you are sharing your tent. It also has sealed seams to protect you from the rain; these seams aren’t always present in Naturehike tents. I've been pondering a new tent and had narrowed down my options to the MSR Hubba Hubba and the Big Agnes Copper Hull (although I was slightly concerned that this one might struggle in Scottish weather...)

Interestingly, MSR’s coating, Durashield™, is now only used in Europe. MSR use their newer and apparently better (“lasts up to three times longer than conventional coatings”), Xtreme Shield in other territories such as the US. We are not sure why this is. Fire Making Equipment Making a Fire can be one of the most important parts of Bushcraft or Camping, Not only does it generate heat and enabling cooking of a great meal it is also one of the most social parts of the trip sitting around with your friends. We have a wide range of dry bags, waterproof map cases and waterproof material and waterproofing treatments like Nikwax, to keep your gear free from water and dirt. EXTRA VESTIBULES - With 2 doors for easy access and 2 vestibules provides gear storage space;vestibule can be affixed to fully closed or partially open for ventilation and sun shade. As always, the first thing I did when my Mongar 2 arrived was get it on the weighing scales. Naturehike advertise its weight at 2.2kg all-in, including the supplied footprint (yes, the footprint comes included - other manufacturer's take note!). My scales said 2.157kg, so we were off to a good start.
