Social media influencers are akin to a new kind of celebrity, and with this label, some may feel that influencers lack the talent to warrant being placed on a pedestal. Her Instagram account started off as a fitness and wellness page but has since evolved into a warm and welcoming hub for other 20-somethings navigating this uncertain time in their lives. Having been online for so much of my life, I have been exposed to, and learnt so much from, the people that have supported me along the way.

Forbat’s following is like a sisterhood: “I know it sounds quite trite, but I do feel like I’ve built a community. I even sat my final A-level at the back of the exam room with question papers printed on huge paper across two desks. It felt so personal joining Oenone on the journey through her life and the writing really captured her personality throughout. I have spent most of my adult life online, so much so that it can be hard to know which parts of me are the 'real' me and which parts I have subconsciously edited, facetuned and perhaps exaggerated, to suit being so hyper-visible'Oenone didn't set out to become an influencer. Thanks to a spattering of embarrassing slogan t-shirts and even more cringe-worthy Instagram posts, the acronym ‘YOLO’ - that’s ‘You Only Live Once’ - has (thankfully) discreetly retired from everyday language. Bad Influence is a reflection on her career to date, candidly discussing the challenges of being criticised through a phone screen and the empowerment of creating a sense of community with her loyal fanbase.

She explores modern-day issues from body image and personal boundaries, to the limitations of online activism – asking the question: can you truly be authentic online? No matter how many bad things, wrong advice and direction she continuously reinvented herself and stuck to her beliefs, whilst it sounds like having a blimey good time. Her popular podcast, social media and book club means she has worked alongside publishing giant Penguin, tech brand Google Chromebook and newspaper The Economist. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I think the fact that talking about books acts as a vehicle to talk about ourselves and the world, unselfconsciously.

As adults, we have “a bit more responsibility to recognise what content may trigger us,” although ultimately, Forbat suggests platforms need “to create simplified ways for us to control what content is being fed to us.It’s the best kind of book - one where you immediately feel at home with the author, you root for them - through their highs and lows, and realise as you turn the final page that you’ve learnt a lot without even noticing you were being taught.
