About this deal

Discover the origin of one of comics' most controversial characters in SECOND CHANCES-collecting the earliest adventures of Jason Todd, the second Robin, from the minds of legendary creators Max Allan Collins, Jim Starlin, Jim Aparo, Dave Cockrum, Denys Cowan, Norm Breyfogle, Jo Duffy and more! report information) Pencils Denys Cowan (signed as Cowan) Inks Dick Giordano (signed as Giordano) Colors Anthony Tollin Letters ? The final Starlin/Aparo episode, "White, Gold and Truth" is the crown jewel -- the entire collection is worth owning just for this issue.

Featuring writing by Max Allan Collins, Jim Starlin and Jo Duffy, Batman: Second Chances covers the retooled origin of the character that was sorely missing from his 1983 debut. Furthermore, there is a lot of emotional complexity at work here, particularly with respect to the unresolved anger Dick harbors toward Batman for being told his sidekick services were no longer necessary.Though some of the ideas that Collin’s put forth were good and ended up becoming iconic (Like Jason’s new origin) the stories themselves fall flat and the Starlin tales are a clear upgrade.

It was clear that DC editorial wasn’t as sure what they wanted to do with Batman post-Crisis as with Superman and Wonder Woman. This time period contains the silly humor and wild characterizations of the earlier period and the more serious themes and consequences from the latter. In the late 1980s, Starlin began working more for DC Comics, writing a number of Batman stories, including the four-issue miniseries Batman: The Cult (Aug.I guess in a way this is the first itteration of Nightwing: Year One, and it's a solid base for what it is. Robin learns of the villain’s connection to his father and goes out seeking revenge while Batman plays to the boy’s better angels and succeeds. Though, in fairness, I suppose these stories were meant to entertain 12-year-olds, the age I was when I first read them. That experience will no doubt be bittersweet, because my BATMAN comics were not well-received by a significant number of fans.

There are a couple of stories that have interesting themes, and another issue has Two-Face and Batman facing off in a baseball stadium that's full of painful, yet somehow entertaining, baseball lingo. That company went to DC, wanting to put together bags of BATMAN comics; the Toys ‘r’ Us people looked at about three or four years of BATMAN…and picked out my issues. Now, I probably quit about fifteen seconds before I would have been fired…but I beat ‘em to the punch. Despite a new origin and a blessing from Dick Grayson to Jason as being his heir appearant, time was short for the new Robin. So, if you're like me and you want solid storytelling with just the right amount of nostalgia--and tons of Jason!

That being said, I can better understand why some fans were upset upon the original introduction of Jason as Robin. My script made it clear that the joke was that they were identical, just a line-up of Marcel Marseau’s. A woman Bruce Wayne meets becomes his next victim, which sparks his drive to find and take down the man.

He has black hair, he's been living alone for a long time after his mother died of a drug overdose and his father was killed by Two Face, who he worked for. After the retcon, Jason Todd is a street kid Bruce finds trying to boost the wheels off of the batmobile. BATMAN – SECOND CHANCES represents a second chance for my comics stories on that character to be reappraised, and I’m pleased to have these stories gathered in one place.
