About this deal

The plot line was messy and the one time it got remotely away from Rose's inner anxiety spiral about everything from crazy family to walking down the street, the action was resolved mysteriously in a single chapter. Slightly Foxed brings back forgotten voices through its Slightly Foxed and Plain Foxed Editions, a series of beautifully produced little pocket hardback reissues of classic memoirs, all of them absorbing and highly individual. After the above, I went for a bit more of an easy beach read – and it ended up being one of my favourites of the year! Rose secretly hoped she might have a bit of fun and meet a charming man in Paris… and indeed she does! This was a tough read, tackling a lot of difficult topics such as depression, self-harm and life in a ‘therapeutic boarding school’.

I loved Rose’s back story about her family and upbringing (Iranian father and fair skinned blond mother). One of my favourite characters of any book I’ve ever read, I just fell in love with her and her honest, humble but troubled life. For many years a farmer in England, John Lewis-Stempel yearned once again to live in a landscape where turtle doves purr and nightingales sing, as they did almost everywhere in his childhood. A heartbreaking read that is centred around the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, The Great Believers is set in Chicago and Paris, following both the stories of Yale, a struggling gay artist, and Fiona, a woman trying to track down her estranged daughter she lost to a cult. Being a foreign observer carries definite advantages; becoming a foreigner distorts interpretation – as we shall see in a moment. In 1987, American director Harold Prince staged a short-lived musical version on Broadway under the title Roza with a libretto and lyrics by Julian More and music by Gilbert Becaud.

The Charente: roofs of red terracotta tiles, bleached-white walls, windows shuttered against the blaring sun. Over that first year, Lewis-Stempel fell in love with the French countryside, from the wild boar that trot past the kitchen window to the glow-worms and citronella candles that flicker in the evening garden. How many times will a woman not use her good sense to figure a way out of said predicament but rather phone it in, again three times on average. After calming the terrified animal, Lewis-Stempel leads him back to his field where the cause of the alarm is revealed: a fire salamander, basking in the sunshine. Momo, a Muslim orphan boy who is about 10 years old, lives under the care of an old Jewish woman named Madame Rosa, who was a prisoner at Auschwitz and later became a prostitute in Paris.Instead of landing in a Parisian fairy tale, Rose falls under the spell of a charming and possibly dangerous expat and encounters an old family friend keeping a surprising secret. It is a compelling story about a young woman in need of some time alone to figure out what she wants from her life. In this book, the author discusses the importance of self-worth, finding and accepting oneself, second chances, finding a balance, and the importance of family and friends.

I was so excited to read this book, my first by Ann Patchett, I especially loved the sound of a book centred around a big old house with a whole lot of history. A young-ish woman, the eldest daughter of an Iranian immigrant, is the go to for her mother and sisters and seems to have been so busy taking responsibility for them that after her father's untimely passing, she failed to make an identity for herself. The only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars is because one of the main plot lines was very predictable. Born in Southeast Asia, CÉ LA VI pays homage to the region’s creative legacy and cultural landmarks, welcoming guests to an immersive and sensual dining experience. I did think it was a great read overall, some of the essays were like nothing I’ve ever come across before.
