The Wave" is one of the reasons of why I like movies. I hardly ever say something like this but this is so right and I can honestly say this about 150 movies I watched. Maybe more. Why I liked this film so much? It was dazzling, provocative, controversial, mind blowing, intriguing, pointed out an interesting discussion, and at the end it is one of these masterpieces that makes you want more, makes you have a discussion with everyone you know about it. Even more important: It urges viewers to look into their own lives and make comparisons of their realities and see what works and what doesn't works. These experiment would have worked in my country? What kind of person I'd be? A member of The Wave or a member of the Resistance? That kind of questions. This movie has everything I like to see in terms of movies. Without a good discussion, some questions and some answers you can't have a decent movie. The basic story is that of a school teacher (an anarchist at heart) who has to teach a class about "Autocracy". Failing to get their attention, he decides to create an experiment whereby they are to create their own mini autocracy and rules amongst themselves (named "The Wave"). With such a controversial subject, the whole thing gets out of hand with the pupils succumbing to the autocratic fascist methodology with grave consequences.

The 20 th century was a time of rampant political change and unrestrained tyranny. One needs only to mention the word ‘fascism’ for such disturbing images to appear before our eyes: Hitler’s Nazi Germany, Benito Mussolini’s right-wing takeover in Italy and the Francoist dictatorship in Spain, to name a few. Als er den Zuhörern erklärt, dass alles nur ein Experiment gewesen und jetzt vorbei sei, wollen einzelne Schüler das Ende ihrer Bewegung nicht wahrhaben und verteidigen leidenschaftlich ihre „Welle“. Nachdem sich Wenger gegen diese erste Reaktion mühsam hat durchsetzen und die Mehrheit überzeugen können, tritt zunächst betretenes Schweigen unter den Schülern ein. Darauf zieht der verzweifelte Tim eine Pistole, verkündet, dass „die Welle lebt!“ und schießt zunächst einen Mitschüler an. Als Wenger ihn beruhigt, nimmt Tim die Waffe wieder herunter. Da die „Welle“ Tims Leben war, wie er verzweifelt bekannt gibt, erschießt er sich danach selbst. Die Schüler sind traumatisiert und Wenger wird von der Polizei abgeführt.

Also the anarchist gang lead by Faust are not violent until they are provoked by the Wave-members putting up their symbol all over town. It becomes Fridge Brilliance when you realise during their first encounter Faust calls the Wave members fascists. Germans would understandably be offended by such an insult. Der Film sei keine Adaption, Figuren und Dialoge, Anfang und Ende habe er geändert. Dennoch behauptete Gansel in einem Pressegespräch, er habe unbedingt ausschließen wollen, dass sein Film so stark vom damaligen Versuch abweiche wie das Buch von Rhue. Dabei bezeichnete er Jones, der dem Filmprojekt als Berater zur Verfügung stand, als „praktisch unser lebendes Echtheitszertifikat“. Jones halte die Figuren in Rhues Roman für schlecht getroffen.
