In our tests, the Swiffer was good at cleaning lighter messes but not as effective with wet, heavy-duty spills, so if you’re regularly mopping large messes, you may want to choose a mop with more cleaning power. At the lab in Industry City, Brooklyn, we cleaned up with 15 standard mops and 27 steam mops—during two separate testing periods—to decide which product was best for which job. We also sent some of the mops home with volunteer testers, who tested their individual performance with real-world situations and spills. Laminate floors are deceivingly delicate. They scuff and scratch easily and especially do not like moisture. Steam mops are not recommended to use on laminate floors. We suggest a microfiber or spin mop to clean laminate floors as these kinds of mops don't retain as much water as sponge or string mops. It's also important to use cleaners that are formulated for and safe to use on laminate flooring. We test robot mops in our actual homes, keeping the following criteria in mind: battery life, navigation, ease of setup and operation, and performance. During the testing process, we took note of how easy to use or unwieldy each product felt and whether it got a lot heavier when soaking wet. It was important for us to note how well each mop cleaned in nooks and crannies, such as in corners and around furniture. We think your mop should also be easily maneuverable for cleaning under furniture and around corners. Plus, it's a huge bonus if it's adjustable, especially if household members of varying heights will be using it and for mopping hard-to-reach places.Sponge: Highly absorbent, sponge mops are excellent for very wet spills. Most are quite sturdy and designed for scrubbing the sponge on any soiled area. Since they are so absorbent, sponge mops can get heavy when wet. Butterfly sponge heads fold in half for easy, hands-free wringing. If you need to clean around a lot of furniture or hard to reach spots, note that this mop doesn’t have a swivel function, so it’s not the most maneuverable option. This mop came with a mop, four mop pads, a charging adapter, a storage tray, and two bottles of cleaning solution. To assemble the mop, we simply had to snap the main pole into place and it was ready to use. Thanks to its 18-volt lithium battery, it can run for up to 20 minutes on one charge. Depending on the type of mop that you buy, some just require hot water for decent floor cleaning. Selected mops are equipped with heads that clean 99.9% of bacteria when wet so that you needn't use any solutions on your floors. Otherwise, whether you prefer to use a floor cleaner for peace of mind or your mop needs it, here are our favourite suggestions for shiny floors. They also leave behind a more than pleasant scent. Robot mops: As an advanced option, robot mops turn cleaning into a hands-free experience. They'll clean all of your floors on their own—just like a robot vacuum—and can often be controlled through an app. As we were mopping, we were impressed with the maneuverability of the mop and how easy it was to mop around furniture. Sponge mops: These are very absorbent, but not typically great for use on any floor that's sensitive to moisture. You'll want to steer clear of them if your space mainly has wood floors that you're looking to spruce up on a weekly, or everyday, basis.

Battery life is also important; the size of your home determines what is sufficient. The longer the robot mop can run on one charge, the better it is for larger homes. We consider a battery life of 60 minutes to be sufficient for small homes and apartments, though, ideally, we like to see results in the 90-minute range. To test battery life, we fully charge the robot before running a cleaning cycle. We then let it clean for as long as it takes to completely run down the battery.
