About this deal

And then there are all the attempts to kill those it's trying to protect. That makes it mad and you do not want to make MB mad!

Publishers Weekly wrote that Wells "gives depth to a rousing but basically familiar action plot by turning it into the vehicle by which SecUnit engages with its own rigorously denied humanity". [17] The Verge likewise felt All Systems Red to be a "pretty basic story", but nonetheless "fun", and lauded Wells's worldbuilding. [18] James Nicoll observed that the plot relies on "opportunistic corporate malevolence", and noted that only Murderbot's personality prevented the setting from being "unrelentingly grim". [19]

Wilken and Gerth

In the story, Dr. Mensah examines the trauma inflicted on her by the kidnapping by GrayCris and the effect it has had on the SecUnit. I Know Mortal Kombat: Murderbot already knew how to fight as a SecUnit, but a large amount of Murderbot's ideas about tactics and stealth are inspired by action media it's watched. And what an awkward transition it was into the new story -- the beginning of System Collapse is one of the clunkiest starts to a sequel I've ever experienced with just way too many human names bandied about for characters that are basically indistinguishable. But thankfully it didn't take overly long before we set off on a new mission that got me settled in more comfortably and feeling like I was reading something closer to a Murderbot plot from the earlier books. I still enjoy the way Wells writes Murderbot's POV, with lots of sardonic inner monologue and copious use of parentheticals, which is a fantastic touch that so few writers do. Just a Machine: Society’s view of SecUnits, and of constructs in general. It’s so pervasive even people from Preservation Alliance, where Bots are considered citizens, have to confront their biases about them. Hugo Awards". Hugo Awards. This was a fairly short interlude told from Dr. Mensah's point of view, as she tries to get a hang on her post- Exit Strategy PTSD, and her increasing dependence on Murderbot. I love Murderbot. Always have and always will. But hate to say it: System Collapse was my least favorite book in the series so far. While it wasn’t necessarily a disaster, it was still disappointing, especially considering it was meant to follow the brilliance of Network Effect. Arada and the others, who have followed the ship into the wormhole, are able to board as Murderbot finishes off the hostiles and manages to reload a deleted ART with a code phrase left for it. As Murderbot guessed, after being invaded by the grey raiders, ART sent them after the SecUnit ostensibly for use as a weapon, but really because ART determined that Murderbot could overcome them. Murderbot is enraged that ART would endanger the SecUnit's humans this way, and is further annoyed when ART insists that Murderbot and its human crew help find and recover the transport vessel's missing crew. System Collapse is a good extension of The Murderbot Diaries. It also hints, I believe, at the direction we can expect in future books. I prefer stories that feature bots and constructs more than their human companions from the Murderbot universe. Still, I can see this story being a nice little treat for fans while they waited for the publication of the next book in the series.

It's very much a found-family story, albeit a slow-build one, and despite the occasional body-count (really a rather small number, given that the series is about a character named Murderbot) it's ultimately a story of good people and happy endings. Murderbot will sometimes punch you straight in the heart with an emotional moment or observation, but it's the good sort of pain that only the best stories cause. I love these books more than I can fairly describe, and I hope you'll give them a chance because I think you'll love them too.

But this book is sneaky. As much as you want to think this is just some lightweight little confection made of robot fights and space murder — and as much as All Systems Red wants to present itself as nothing but robot fights and space murder — Martha Wells did something really clever. She hid a delicate, nuanced and deeply, grumpily human story inside these pulp trappings, by making her murderous robot story primarily character-driven. And the character doing the driving?I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” I had told Mensah. “I think you might know,” she had said. “You just don’t want to talk about it.”) Corrupt Corporate Executive: Steals Maro, Rami, and Tapan's work, then tries to murder them to silence them. Brilliant, but Lazy: Surprisingly so given how much Murderbot actually accomplishes, but the fact is that it would much rather spend whatever available time it has watching vids.

System update. A short interview with Martha Wells about her upcoming Murderbot novella, System Collapse". Dec 15, 2022. Archived from the original on 2022-12-22. We are all a little bit Murderbot... we see ourselves in its skin. And that reading about this sulky, soap-opera-loving cyborg killing machine might be one of the most human experiences you can have in sci-fi right now.."— NPR Healing Factor: SecUnits are capable of regenerating large portions of their human flesh with medical assistance. Comments after first read: 4.5 stars - it was great! The only thing better than a Murderbot novella is a full Murderbot novel ... with ART (the Asshole Research Transport) in it. Review to come! Cheers!! I'm sorry most of my Murderbot-loving GR friends have to wait until May 2020 to get this, but I promise it's worth the wait. I thank NetGalley and Tordotcom for an advance reader copy. This review expresses my honest opinions.Murderbot wasn't programmed to care. So, its decision to help the only human who ever showed it respect must be a system glitch, right? Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah--its former owner (protector? friend?)--submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit. Love the 'Bot and want to join a re/read? Discuss the upcoming release? Nataliya, Dennis, and I lead a group: As to the writing itself, it alternates between engrossing, hilarious, heart-rending, and painfully accurate. You're going to identity with and relate to Murderbot so much that you'll find yourself (at least, if you're anything like me you will) also thinking of humans as an "other" during the course of your reading, as you mentally (or out-loud; no judgement if you're one of those people who exclaims aloud as you read; I rarely do, but this seems like an appropriate book series for that sort of behavior) shout at them to not do stupid things and just listen to their SecUnit, please! It was too dark for her to see my expression. I’m not sure what it was but you could probably describe it as “skeptical.” (Ratthi says that’s how I look most of the time.)”
