Disney Death: Dola and her crew are seemingly blown up by the Goliath, but are later shown to still be alive on Laputa, albeit captured by the military. Muska threatens her life for the crystal, but Pazu appears and bargains for a brief truce. Sheeta teaches Pazu another ancient phrase, the spell of destruction, which they recite, causing Laputa to begin to collapse. The light of the spell blinds Muska, who falls to his death, while Sheeta and Pazu are protected by the giant tree's roots. While Laputa's bottom falls out, the rest of the castle – along with Dola's glider – is preserved by the giant tree, and the island begins to rise into space. Sheeta, Pazu, and Dola's gang are able to escape, and briefly reunite before flying away. VanderMeer, Jeff; Chambers, S.J. (2012). Maki Oyamada, the daughter of Dr. Oyamada who originally created the robot, later became the prototype of Nausicaä in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Sumi Shimamoto voiced Maki Oyamada and Nausicaä and Clarisse d'Cagliostro in The Castle of Cagliostro.Lost in Translation: Although faithful in spirit overall, some aspects of the original script didn't survive in the script for the Disney dub. The references to "Gulliver's Travels" and "Treasure Island" are both omitted, and the last part of Sheeta's speech at the end of the film is changed from "you can't survive without mother Earth" to "the world cannot live without love," which feels out of place with the actual song. Oddly enough, even though the forgotten '80s JAL dub maintains the last part of Sheeta's speech and the "Treasure's Island" reference, it too omits the "Gulliver's Travels" reference. In Disney's dub Cloris Leachman's performance as Dola in general. When Muska goes crazy at the end, Mark Hamill really gets to have fun, laughing maniacally and spouting a very memorable "Goodbye! Enjoy the ride!" prior to sending the soldiers to their deaths. There are even places where he sounds like The Joker. Ominous Floating Castle: Laputa's ruins, the robots, and the superweapon inside all make it mysterious and dangerous place aside from the fact that, of course, it is a flying castle. Girl in the Tower: Sheeta is housed in a spacious private sleeping quarters reserved for a high ranking officer on the upper floor of one of the fortress' towers.

The General in the Japanese version definitely fits this trope. Ichiro Nagai was practically the go-to guy for hammy villains in his day. Dulcinea Effect: A strange girl drops out of the sky with a mysterious pendant and she's getting chased by suspicious-looking men and the army. Does Pazu ask any questions? Never! Napier proposes that Miyazaki's insistence on showing the freedom of children in Laputa can be credited to the influence of Panda and the Magic Serpent (1958). [40] Miyazaki first watched the film at age 17, and it moved him to pursue a career in animation. [44] At a lecture given in 1982 at Waseda University, he said "When I saw Panda and the Magic Serpent, it was as if the scales fell from my eyes; I realized that I should depict the honesty and goodness of children in my work." He considers this a focal point in his endeavors. [1] The theme of innocence is explored more focally in Miyazaki's succeeding film My Neighbor Totoro (1988). [45] Style [ edit ] A statue of a Laputan robot on display at the Ghibli Museum. The robots are an example of Miyazaki's many stylistic influences. [46]Miyazaki, who was forced to raise funds due to delays in the production of Isao Takahata's film The Story of Yanagawa's Canals, proposed this film after consulting Toshio Suzuki, who worked for Tokuma Shoten. Additionally, this was the first film that featured the profile of Totoro in the opening, despite being released before My Neighbor Totoro (1988). Stone, Tom (February 27, 2017). Each robot's arms and legs are extensible, and can be operated independently of each other. A row of concealed flaps is attached to each arm, giving the robots the abilities to fly and glide. They are also very hefty, as they can effortlessly scale up vertical walls and surfaces. Despite the absence of visible ears, they can indeed hear sound, as their eyes pulse red when they detect noises. From the right eye, they can fire a destructive laser of variable force; at peak strength, this laser can melt through solid wood and steel. From the left eye, they can fire smaller laser which don't explode but can easily slice through metals. There are two variants, combat type and non-combat type that can be differentiated based on several characterisitics such as colorations and spikes on arms. The royal coat of arms can be seen for the first time on Sheeta's flight stone. [4] Later, the coat of arms reappears in the film to mark elements of the plot (and so that Muska can find his way to the command center). The coat of arms appears on a combat robot that was stored in the Tedis fortress. On the city island, Muska discovered the entrance to the dome by scanning a wall for the coat of arms and then holding the flying stone in front of it. Robot Soldier: Laputa and it's remaining citizens are guarded by an army of fearsome flying robot soldiers. Pazu says to Sheeta after they have landed that Laputa can only be reached with the flying stone. [7] However, this does not explain how Pazu's father was able to get to Laputa. [1] Perhaps he also had his own flying stone with him, which was never seen in the film.
