About this deal

Furthermore, you can recycle the wastewater in your garden or greenhouse, or feeding other plants and lawns. Recirculating Systems Interestingly, many organic growers never irrigate to the point of run-off, preferring to keep the soil at a near-constant moisture level all the time.

Before we start, if you're looking for a fertiliser that can supplement all of your plants, we'd recommend using ' BabyBio Concentrated Houseplant Food'as it has the perfect blend of NPK, and all of the micronutrients. This product can be also used on Orchids, as long as you halve the recommended strength to avoid burning its roots. However, that need not be the case. By using the right media and carefully automating feed times, the waste can be minimal. For smaller setups such as XL or XXL tents, the Wilma 4 pot system and Wilma 8 pot systems are excellent choices. You will need to drill a hole in the reservoir’s lid at each end—one is for the airline from the air pump to the air stone and to the submersible pump, the other hole is for tubing from the nutrient solution from the pump to the drip emitters. Think of feeding your plants like a conveyor belt: the nutrients head past the plant’s roots to give them exactly what they need at that time.

For a more comprehensive assessment of measuring runoff time, see our 6 Golden Rules for Drip Irrigation below. Drip-feeding with different media typesAnd, we’ll give you our 6 Golden Rules for successfully setting up and using drip irrigation in your grow room. Tools—when you’re putting together a hydroponic system, there are tools which will come in useful. You may want to borrow them if you don’t own them already. You will need a drill, cutters, filter material, shovels, tape measures, and PVC glue. However, if you’re going for a non-recovery system, you will need a precision timer that gives you maximum control. A Reservoir

Most fertilisers will be based off the three macronutrients, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K), but some will include all thirteen. Upon choosing the right fertiliser for your houseplant, make a note of what you want the plant to do. If you opt to build a non-recirculating system, your plants won’t recirculate the nutrient solution, and you will just need to top up the reservoir when it looks low. The dangers of a non-recirculating system are that you can end up with wasted nutrients, and if you’re not careful with your timers, the plants could drown from too much nutrient solution being there, and they don’t have the chance to dry out and absorb much needed oxygen. With this in mind, my personal preference is the Recirculating Drip system, and below you will find instructions on how to build this type of system. Concentrated: Miracle-Gro, BabyBio, Westland & Growth Technology (Citrus Focus). Drip Feeders: Lorbex, BabyBio & Fito

The Recirculating Drip system also goes by the name of ‘Recovery Drip system’ because it is recovering and recirculating any nutrient solution that is in excess and returning it to the reservoir, where it can be recirculated in the future. This type of system needs a vertical set up for the excess water and nutrients to be able to drain into the reservoir below. Having the nutrients recycled is cost efficient. But you do need to keep an eye on the nutrient levels and pH levels of your water, so you will need to monitor this regularly. This is often a wonderful solution for orchid growers in colder climates, and enables the plants to grow so much better than they would if left indoors all year. There’s no one rule for watering because every plant has different needs. So, things to consider when watering a plant are: But it should be the time it takes for the pots to achieve the same moisture levels (weight) it was before the last feed. This is our preferred drip irrigation method as it delivers fresh nutrients each time the plants are fed and helps stop the build-up of any excess nutrient within the root zone.
