Tragedy strikes in the first year of the marriage when she, unfortunately in James's view, becomes pregnant. The memories of Anne's death have always remained in his thoughts. In due course, Letty also dies, of diphtheria. In the TV series James Onedin’s first ship, the Charlotte Rhodes, was portrayed by a schooner of the same name, built in 1904 in Fjellebroens Shipyard, Denmark, by F. Hoffman. The emergence of steam ships and their impact on trade was interesting, as was the constant rivalry and scheming between the Onedins themselves. Not sure how historically accurate it was - but it appeared to give a good account of the dangers of life at sea and the hardships encountered by the sailor's families ashore.
