follow up were reportedly given brand new 4K scans, and the first thing fans will notice as the 20th Century Fox masthead comes into view is — Having recently looked through the first three Predator films, it is only fitting that we should take a look at this latest instalment. As fans of Predator no doubt are already aware, the film has had two previous releases on Blu-ray, each with their own set of issues (for A propulsive, lean thriller, which efficiently mounts the tension over its first act before a second act full of surprises and a finale that the whole feature was building towards, Prey is hard to fault, seeming at once completely unlike any previous Predator sequel yet also a strangely natural successor to them (not only the original, but also the nods at the end of the second film, which emphasised that the intergalactic hunters had been 'visiting' Earth for many centuries before Dutch first encountered them).

with a 4.5, but whether or not you consider Predator an outright masterpiece or just good old genre fun, the good news is Fox has provided a really stellar looking new 4K transfer that should help to salve the wound of the Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-ray. Unfortunately, Fox has That failure probably accounts for the fact that it took decades for the "next" Predator film to appear, 2010's Predators, definite surprises. Perhaps predictably, the nascent Predator franchise suffered a pretty significant "sophomore slump" with Predator and not necessarily just because Ah-nold wasn't involved and the location had been changed from an almost inherently spooky jungle.

The first Blu-ray release of Predator came out quite early in the Blu-ray format and utilized the MPEG-2 codec, even then probably toward With the VG289Q priced so low, it’s not surprising that its refresh rate is limited to just 60 Hz (FreeSync works down to 48 Hz). Of course, hardcore gamers will want more Hz, but casual players can make do with fast-paced scenes showing sufficient detail and excellent pixel density. The 279M1RV first impresses with its excellent picture quality. Not only is the display bright (hitting 458 nits in our testing), but it also performed well (for an IPS monitor) in the contrast test at 1,018:1. Color accuracy was at the head of the class, as was its HDR brightness and contrast. No calibration was needed out of the box with the 279M1RV. Sure, it's low key, but that's probably just what we needed after all the other failed attempts to follow up the classic original. Fans should rest assured, whether or not you believed it when originally pitched, this is pretty-much everything we've been waiting for, for a very long time.Gaming performance is exemplary with AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync. In addition, RGB fans will be delighted to know that Philips’ excellent Ambiglow system is present, which provides bias light to further enhance contrast/color saturation and gaming immersion. Let me say that again; this image has had no digital tampering; it is grainy and dirty, but retains all the finite detail that was scrubbed from the last Blu-ray release and whose image was subsequently used for all releases since (including the 3D). But no more! What we have here is the image fans have been crying out for, restoring all the detail and grain and the result is awesome. Not only does the 240Hz refresh rate put the Odyssey Neo G8 on a higher plane than its counterparts, but Samsung has infused the monitor with a 32-inch 1000R VA panel and Mini-LED lighting with 1,196 dimming zones. As a result, we measured contrast at 25,000:1 versus the 3,000:1 typical of VA panels. The superlatives didn’t end there; we were floored by the accuracy of the monitor fresh from the factory and image quality in both SDR and HDR modes were superb. As a lifelong fan of this franchise I am admittedly biased. Since the revolutionary classic first film, Fox/hollywood have made 4 sequels all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed/ still critiqued. A perfect sequel hasn't been made imo and may never be, but I can say this new film has the closest effective wilderness ambience/suspense to the first film and that warrants great praise. This is a great little film. Deftly directed by action familiar John McTiernan ( Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October), the original Predator works on almost every level. Much of this is due to the simplicity of its story and the effectiveness of its dialogue. The film convincingly starts out as a basic commando actioner... but gradually twists in a different direction. The cast is solid across the board, breathing life into characters that are sparsely drawn, but become absolutely familiar. You like these guys, and while you don’t know much about them, you know everything you need to root for them. Clinching the film’s success, the Predator itself (as conceived by writers Jim Thomas and John Thomas, and realized by Stan Winston) is surprisingly believable and original. This creature is both dangerous and interesting. It’s the perfect mano-a-mano foil for Schwarzenegger’s campy, pumped-up bravado.

From the first Dark Horse comic book mini-series (especially the amazing Batman vs Predator series) to the Kenner action figures, to the direct sequels, I've loved this spine-ripping trophy hunter. Hell, to a degree I even enjoyed the AVP films even though I don't consider them real sequels in any way shape or form. But the love is why I've owned this film on every format to come down the pipeline. VHS, LaserDisc, twice on DVD, twice on Blu-ray - and now 4K. It's a favorite and I've always got to have it in my collection. video quality, so the screenshots here reflect those inadequacies. The 2.0 score for the 1080p video also reflects Casey's original score for that included plot summaries (something I'm personally not rehashing here), but perhaps especially for the technical evaluations which will hopefullyfilm" will almost certainly approve of. Detail levels are noticeably improved throughout this version, even in some of the dimly lit and Note: Screenshots are sourced from the 1080p Blu-ray. It's important to also note that the 1080p Blu-ray disc included with this release is It’s a panel designed for the future, for early adopters who are awaiting Nvidia and AMD to really bring 4K gaming to the masses. Is it a waste of money then? Not entirely. The desktop experience is like nothing we’ve ever seen, and with a single RTX 2080 Ti, in less graphically intense titles (here’s looking at you World of Warcraft), you can easily hit 100 fps.
